An Exploration of Student--Athletes Perspectives on the Athletic Trainer/Coach Relationship
The head coach of a collegiate athletics team plays a big role in the life of student—athletes and often provides various levels of social support. Athletic trainers, who provide medical care to the student--athlete have also been noted as providing social support to student—athletes, specifically post injury. Coaches and athletic trainers must work together to properly serve the student--athlete. Depending on the status of the relationship the student—athlete may be affected. Through a case study design, student—athletes will be interviewed to explore how they perceived their head coach and athletic trainers’ relationship, while also looking into how it may have impacted the social support they received. The goal of this presentation is to discuss how the relationship between athletic trainer and head coach may influence the social support they provide to student—athletes. By exploring this area of research, it may help both athletic trainers and coaches understand how their relationship impacts the care they provide to student—athletes. This information could improve health and wellbeing of student—athletes, a primary goal of the NCAA.
