Trailrunning and environmental consciousness : the case of African-American clubs
Since its very recent in the early 21st century, trailrunning has always conveyed the image of a sport activity keen on raising awareness about environmental issues. As a sport which is quintessentially connected with its environment, trailrunning has shaped runners’ mentality and consciousness in such a way that some railrunners are now known for developing a lifestyle which is exclusively dedicated to protecting the environment._x000D_
However, trailrunning is also characterized by its almost excluively white-dominated identity, as the presence of minorities remains an exception in this sport, contrary to the more traditional on-road races (half-marathons and marathons, for instance). This paper aims at analyzing the rise of African-American trailrunning clubs and their environmental goals, which partake in a desire to change the image of trailrunning and aim at integrating a sport whose challenge remains to open up to racial diversity. The interest lies in the ability of sport to combine racial and environmental concerns, especially in the United States, where the two issues still occupy center stage.
